Where to look for a stay in Zakopane

Zakopane is small, so instead of districts what counts is the distance from the centre and the slopes. Most places are around Krupowki, in the heart of town, where the restaurants, shops and the Gubalowka funicular are at hand. It is quieter and often cheaper further out, towards Bystre, Koscielisko or Kuznice, close to the trails and the foot of Kasprowy Wierch. Some hotels sit on the hills with a view of the Tatras, but those are easier to reach by car or taxi than on foot.

• First time in Zakopane. Close to Krupowki is the easiest base. From here it is a walk to the promenade, the Gubalowka funicular and the cable car up Kasprowy Wierch.

• For families. Hotels with family rooms and a pool or a water park, handy after a day on the slopes or the trail. Many include breakfast in the rate.
• For couples. Hotels with a spa, saunas and a jacuzzi, good for unwinding after a hike. Quieter places away from the bustle of Krupowki suit evenings for two.
• For active summers. A base near the mountain entrances, towards Kuznice and Koscielisko, where the trails start, including the one to Morskie Oko. An early breakfast helps you set off before the crowds.
• With a car. Hotels on the hills with a view of the Tatras, where parking is key. From there it is easiest to drive down to the centre.
